Understanding Adjustable Bed Functions: What Do They Actually Do?

For many people, the idea of an adjustable bed sounds useful, but the functions can feel confusing at first.

What does zero gravity mean? Why would someone need hi-lo height adjustment? What is Trendelenburg tilt? Are electric beds only for people with care needs, or can they be used by anyone wanting more comfort in bed?

At Life Changing Beds, we help customers understand what each function does and how it may support daily life.

An adjustable bed can be helpful for NDIS participants, Support at Home clients, elderly customers, people with reduced mobility and those needing carer support. However, adjustable beds can also be used by everyday customers who simply want more comfort, easier positioning, or support for pain management and relaxation.

Not every adjustable base includes every function, but understanding the options can make it easier to choose the right bed.

Head and Foot Elevation

Head and foot elevation are the most common adjustable bed functions.

Head elevation allows the upper body to be raised, which may help with reading, watching television, sitting up in bed, or resting in a more supported position.

Foot elevation allows the legs to be raised, which may assist with comfort, relaxation and reducing pressure through the lower body.

These simple functions can make a big difference to how a person rests, moves and uses their bed each day.

Hi-Lo Height Adjustment

Hi-lo height adjustment allows the whole bed platform to move up and down.

This can be especially useful for elderly clients, people with reduced mobility, NDIS participants and Support at Home clients who need the bed height to suit transfers, standing and care needs.

A lower bed height may help a person get into bed more easily, especially when they need to lift their legs onto the mattress. A higher bed height may make it easier to stand up from the bed without placing as much strain on the knees, hips, back or shoulders.

Hi-lo functionality may assist with:

• Getting into bed more easily
• Standing up from bed with less strain
• Sit-to-stand transfers
• Wheelchair and walking frame access
• Creating a safer working height for carers
• Personal care and repositioning
• Making the bed
• Cleaning underneath the bed

One hidden benefit of a hi-lo bed is that it can make everyday tasks easier. Raising the bed can help carers, family members or support workers assist without bending as much. It can also make changing sheets and cleaning around the bed more manageable.

Trendelenburg Tilt

Trendelenburg tilt allows the bed to tilt so the feet are positioned higher than the head.

In an adjustable bed, this function may be used to create a deeper leg elevation position than standard foot elevation alone. It can also assist some clients with positioning and transitions, depending on their needs and advice from their health professional.

Trendelenburg tilt may assist with:

• Raising the feet higher than normal foot elevation
• Supporting certain resting positions
• Assisting with some positioning needs
• Helping carers with specific care routines

This function is not suitable for everyone. People with certain medical conditions, breathing concerns, reflux, heart issues or circulation concerns should seek advice from a relevant health professional before using Trendelenburg tilt.

Zero Gravity

Zero gravity is a popular adjustable bed position designed to create a feeling of balanced support.

In this position, the upper body and legs are both raised. This can help distribute body weight more evenly and may reduce pressure through the lower back, hips and legs.

Zero gravity may be helpful for customers who want:

• A more relaxed resting position
• Less pressure through the lower back
• Leg elevation
• A comfortable position for reading or resting
• A supported alternative to lying flat
• A more weightless feeling in bed

Many customers enjoy zero gravity because it feels comfortable, supportive and easy to relax in.

Massage

Some adjustable bases include a vibrational massage function.

This is designed for comfort and relaxation. It is not the same as hands-on massage therapy, but it can provide a gentle vibration through the bed to help the body feel more relaxed.

Depending on the base, massage may include:

• Three levels of intensity
• Different vibration zones
• A timer function
• Automatic shut-off after a selected time
• A relaxing setting before sleep

The timer is helpful because the massage can be set to turn off after a certain period, rather than running continuously. This can be useful for customers who like using massage while resting, reading or preparing for sleep.

Anti-Snore Position

The anti-snore function is designed to raise the head section slightly.

This gentle elevation may help open the airways and reduce snoring for some people. It is usually a small adjustment, rather than a full sitting position.

The anti-snore function may be helpful for:

• People who snore when lying flat
• Partners who are disturbed by snoring
• Customers who prefer slight upper body elevation
• Creating a more supported resting angle

This function is not a treatment for sleep apnoea or other medical breathing conditions. Anyone with significant snoring, pauses in breathing, or daytime fatigue should speak with a medical professional.

Memory Buttons

Memory buttons allow the user to save a preferred bed position.

Once the position is saved, the person can press one button and the bed will move back to that favourite setting. This is useful for customers who regularly use the same position for sleeping, resting, watching television, reading or pain relief.

Memory buttons may help with:

• Saving a favourite comfort position
• Reducing the need to adjust the bed manually each time
• Supporting independence
• Making the remote easier to use
• Helping clients return to a reliable position

For people with reduced hand strength, fatigue, disability or cognitive changes, memory buttons can make the bed simpler and more practical to use.

One Touch Flat Button

Some adjustable bed remotes include a one touch flat button.

This button brings the bed back to a flat position with one press. Instead of lowering the head and foot sections separately, the user can press one button and allow the base to return to flat.

This can be useful:

• Before getting out of bed
• When preparing for sleep
• When changing position
• When making the bed
• When carers need the bed returned to a neutral position

A one touch flat button is a simple feature, but it can make daily use much easier.

Who Can Benefit From Adjustable Bed Functions?

Adjustable beds are often used by people with mobility, comfort or care needs, but they are not only for clinical situations.

They may be helpful for:

• Elderly customers
• NDIS participants
• Support at Home clients
• People with a disability
• People recovering from injury or surgery
• People with back, hip, knee or shoulder discomfort
• People who find it difficult to get in and out of bed
• People who need carer assistance
• Customers who want more comfort for reading, resting or watching television
• Couples with different comfort preferences

For some people, the benefit is independence. For others, it is comfort, relaxation, easier transfers, or support for carers.

The right adjustable bed should suit the person, their room, their mattress, their mobility and the way they use the bed every day.
